What is Napster

Napster.com is a website providing you a downloadable software that will allow your computer to share MP3 files over the internet with other computers through a connection at Napster site. Basically, Napster acts as a hub to link computers together to share certain directories. Security is provided by allowing only the directories you choose to be shared with other Napster users. The Napster program itself does not run within your regular browser and all that is required after the original software download is an internet connection.

Each time you sign on to the network the Napster software compiles a  list of the music files in the directories you have agreed to share. Napster software provides search capabilities to look for songs by the song name or the name of the artist. After you input your search criteria the Napster software searches the compiled data of logged on computers and provides you search results. In these results you are able to see the handle or screen name of the computer the song resides on, the size of the file and the speed at which the other computer is connected to the internet. As you can imagine a search for one artist or song will return several options  for downloading. The information provided helps you choose your fastest download possible.

If you find a song that you would like to download you simply double click on that song and Napster will create a connection between your computer and the other and begin the download to your computer. Of course, this also works in reverse and if someone finds a song on your computer they can upload it to theirs in the same manner.

As you can see, Napster really never copies or stores the files, it simply provides a virtual network for users to connect and copy files from other users.
